My next holiday adventure awaits!

I’ve just booked a short vacation to Florence for 3nights in August with a dear friend of mine.

I’ve never been to Italy but I’m hoping some of you out there might help me with some trip ideas! Yes (as pictured) I have my paper back travel guide but it’s so much better to have people’s experiences.

Of course there is TripAdvisor but still, I would love some comments on the best places to eat, have ice cream, photo ops etc. I’ll be sure to let you guys know come August how it went 🙂

Ciao x

The city of angels and burgers

Having come from sunny L.A. a few weeks ago, my eyes have definitely been opened up. I went as a leisurely holiday with my partner and stayed in Hollywood through an Airbnb apartment. (Good old Airbnb!) We were welcomed by a raccoon as we arrived exhausted at around 9 pm. That was certainly a unique experience! Luckily it was just hanging out on the roof, cautiously observing our movements, because boy I was scared. I’ve never encountered one before but they look mean. Those white-masked bandits!!

One of the things that struck me the most was the amount of overt homeless people. I mean, we have a lot of homeless people in London, unfortunately, but in Hollywood especially, they’re all examples that chasing the dream ain’t easy!

Beautiful ‘Birds of Paradise’ dotted all around the neighbourhood

I’ve heard how Hollywood was a little dirty and capital of superficiality – YUP that’s definitely true. The only reason we were staying there is because it was affordable, local and we weren’t planning on staying at home all day everyday! Also, I have to add, there were so much fast food outlets around us! I’m sorry but you American people can get seriously big, like super big and I can see why!

Tensions in the city – captured outside an LAPD station, ironically.

However, if you’re ever near Little Armenia, there’s a great food truck called Armando’s Hot Food and they sell the usual Mexican food and burgers. This SAVED us when we first arrived in the area as it was already late and we were starving! We did try In-n-out burgers later on our trip, but no, THIS burger was epic. And only $5 with a combo including drink and fries. Mmmmmmmm. I also tried the chicken quesadillas which was tasty! It came with guacamole and ketchup but you can also order a combo.

Runyon canyon was probably one of my most enjoyable experiences believe it or not! Looking up from below, it looks really intimidating as you see the march of ant-like people following the path. All decked out in their gear, carrying dogs. Getting to the top…OH yes. It was all worth it 🙂

Oh yes and a dairy free Pinkberry treat for our trek 🙂

Did I mention the Minions and Hogwarts???!!

I went to Universal Studios of course! My partner and I went on the first day of the Harry Potter world opening. 1 hr and 20 mins to wait for the Harry Potter ride, but it was fun! YAY 🙂

Would I go back, yes for sure! But probably not in Hollywood. The hype isn’t worth it for me. And plus there’s still parts of L.A. I haven’t explored…

National Poetry Month

I am inspired by @quartervida for this post to nominate a poet from my hometown London for National Poetry Month!

Her name is Ayo known to most as Golden Blue  (@Goldencoat)

The reason why I have dedicated this post to  her, is not only to share the love, but express the depth of this woman! EVERY TIME I see a post of hers on social media or see her perform on stage (which I admit I need to do more often) I always feel I can connect in such a DEEP and refreshing way. She’s so nutritional in such a soulful spiritual way and she never seists to amaze me by the work she does, either leading intergenerational workshops with youth groups, creative workshops, campaigning with the local community for racial and social solidarity. She’s a poet, musician, sister, teacher, role model, and so much more. (I realise I sound like a commercial advertisement…”and so much more”, HA!)

She really is a force to be reckoned with.

Here is a recent poem of hers, bonne appetite!

“There’s a storm coming in from the west”

The captain just announced it
But at least no one is dead
Touched down on the docks
We’re my ancestors bled

Sure it must have, briefly
Came into our heads
As the landing was aborted
And the plane shook in the wind

As the thick cloud smothered sight
And the seat belts were fastened tight
Allah protect us this night
Let not our fears soar too high

But no one seems too grateful
Or claps for the pilot as we land
People are huffing and puffing
Not seeing greater works at hand

It’s pouring down with dread
And I just left the sunshine
Wishing I’d missed this flight
But knowing it’s all in God’s time

And my minds on other things
On those poor poor people
Whose lives have been snatched
So brutally
Because of this whirlpool of evil

And as the crisp cold air
Touches my face
I think of the slave driver
Who wrote Amazing Grace

The sound is not sweet
The silence is sour
I’m just keeping my eyes
On the final hour…
